Missoula, MT Emergency Dental Services
If you have ever been hit with a toothache at 2 AM or lost a crown right before an important meeting, you know how frustrating and stressful a dental emergency can be.
Most of us have been through a dental emergency, so we understand that it is crucial for us to see you as quickly as possible. Our immediate goal is to relieve your discomfort and then take the steps needed to correct the problem and let you get back to your life.
How to Handle Common Emergencies
By nature, emergencies are unexpected and usually happen at the most inconvenient times. At Cornerstone Dental, we always do our best to get you on our schedule the same day. We recognize, though, that it is still helpful for you to have an idea of how to handle a dental emergency yourself until you can get to our office for help.
Note: If your injury involves trauma to your face or jaw or you experience excessive bleeding, please call 911 or go directly to an emergency room.
Knocked Out (Avulsed) Tooth
This is a critical emergency because time is of the essence. The sooner you get to our office, the better chance we have of saving the tooth.
We know it’s a challenge, but you can help yourself by remaining calm. Handle the tooth gently, taking care not to touch the root so you don’t disturb any attached tissue. It is crucial to keep the root moist until you get to our office, so keep it in a container with milk, water, or even saliva, if necessary.
Severe Tooth Pain
Toothaches are not normal. If you experience intense pain that affects your ability to function, it’s a good indicator that something serious is happening with the tooth. You may feel this kind of pain due to advanced decay, severe periodontal infection, or an abscess from an infected root canal.
Call our office and try taking an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen. Until you can be seen, place a cold compress on and off your face for 20-minute intervals.
Mild Tooth Discomfort
Even mild pain is a sign that there’s a problem we need to address as soon as possible. You may not need to see us the same day, but please call us right away and let us know what's going on. We will get you on the schedule quickly to find out what’s going on and what we can do to help.
Crown or Filling Falls Out
It’s important to take care of a loose crown or filling to restore function and protect the tooth from further damage. We will have to create a new filling, but in most cases, we can replace the crown and cement it back in place.
