Periodontal Treatment

With permission from our patient, we would like to show you the difference between a healthy and unhealthy mouth. Sometimes our oral health takes a backseat to the busyness of life, and in these before pictures you can see deposit or calculus (calcified plaque deposits that contain bacteria) and red, inflamed gums. In some situations, the calculus can be so harmful due to the large amounts of bacteria present that the bone and gums start to recede. This is called periodontal disease, which is irreversible. Periodontal disease is treated with scaling and root planning over a course of three visits. Each half of the mouth will be treated at two separate visits with anesthesia followed by an appointment 6 weeks later to make sure the mouth is healing appropriately. Following scaling and root planning, 3-4 month recall appointments are recommended to help maintain health. Although periodontal disease is not reversible, we are able to maintain the bone by doing the above treatment. In the after photos, you see the absence of calculus and inflammation and a light pink color to the gum tissue.
